Minding Creative Minds is Ireland’s premier 24/7 wellness support program (32 counties and our Irish Overseas) for the entire Irish creative sector.
Minding Creative Minds (MCM) completed its video awareness campaign with a third clip focused on musical artists, stage crews and live event employees in the creative sector.
With streaming declining and live shows collapsing, it’s been a tough year for Irish artists. Almost half of professional artists have considered giving up their artistic careers in the past year, largely due to a lack of income and financial pressures, an Arts Council report found in July.
48% of artists described the financial impact of Covid-19 as “severe” and those working in music said the situation was worse in 2021 than in 2020. The survey also found that the “lack of ‘work opportunities’ was the most difficult aspect of trying to maintain an artistic practice.
The Arts Council said it saw a 90% increase in funding applications in 2020 compared to 2019 and approved funding for 129% more applicants. It funded less than half (47%) of the total amount requested.
Given the incredible burden that players in the music industry carry, Thinking about creative minds notably appeal to this facet of the creative sector in one of their awareness campaign videos.
MCM hopes the videos will speak to the creative community, empowering them to choose to get vital mental health services, life advice, professional help and more. It’s the perfect way to unify an entire sector that has been deeply impacted by Covid-19 restrictions, with many artists being made redundant or forced to drop out of their industry altogether.
The initiative, planned since 2018 by Dave Reid, co-founder of the Choice Music Prize, artist manager and graduate in psychotherapy, was launched during the summer of 2020. The services of Minding Creative Minds were initially open only to the music sector; including artists, artist managers, support staff and live music event staff, however, with additional funding within six months, the organization’s services were opened up to the entire creative sector; nearly a year ahead of schedule.
Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media, Catherine Martin TD, recently expressed her delight at being able to award funding to Minding Creative Minds this year.
“Given the challenges faced by the arts and culture sectors during the pandemic, this initiative has been an important intervention to support the well-being of the creative community,” said Minister Martin. “Throughout 2021, Minding Creative Minds has continued to develop and expand its support for the Irish creative sector, both at home and abroad, and I would like to commend them for the valuable services they provide. Covid continues to present a major challenge for the arts and culture sector and this uncertainty is very difficult to manage and Minding Creative Minds is a key support for creative people during this difficult time.
In the 17 months since its launch in 2020, Minding Creative Minds has facilitated approximately 1,000 hours of support through instant support, counseling sessions and counseling sessions.
“Our message is simple, with a few key benchmarks; Minding Creative Minds was created specifically for our creative sector, for its employees, for our needs,” says Dave Reid, Founder of MCM. “Whatever your work in the sector; if you are a performing artist or work in a supporting role; you are in the Irish creative sector and our services are at your disposal.”
Minding Creative Minds offers a wide range of support services, from mental health support and counseling to advice on practical issues (legal, financial, life coaching, career advice, administrative issues around your business if you are self-employed And much more).
