A year ago today, the world said goodbye to one of dubstep’s greatest thinkers. Cookie Monsta’s label Circus Records has shocked the dance music community at large with the tragic news of the 31-year-old producer’s sudden passing.
Today, a year later, the scene continues to mourn the absence of the famous bass music producer, while still appreciating the legacy he left with his music.
Cookie Monsta had almost arrived on the ground floor of Circus Records, one of the most impactful imprints that would significantly shape the trajectory of modern dubstep. Label co-founder Doctor P didn’t have to wait long to realize that trying his luck with Cookie was one of the best business decisions he could have made. His first record on the label, Ginger Pubes / Blurgh! single-handedly has since reached tens of millions of ears and continues to be held in high regard among longtime fans of the genre.
Among his closest collaborators, the memory of Cookie Monsta is omnipresent. FuntCase, who has shared the stage with the producer of âRuffâ too many times to count, recently recalled feeling his Lost Lands experience this year was incomplete without Cookie Monsta by his side.
Outside of the stage, Cookie Monsta was often described as benevolent, and in the words of Disciples’ files, “a great friend to all.” He is survived by his son Olly, otherwise affectionately known as “Mini Monsta”.
