Young and full of musical prowess, 17-year-old Kali Flanagan, known by her stage name KALI, is unapologetic in her music and has a lot to say about her youth and her navigating the world at large. Writing about the pangs of youth and how confusing it is to grow old, introspective lyrics meet a delightful indie-pop sound in KALI’s music where together the tones and themes reverberate to create a warm and inviting space. to explore thoughts and feelings.
KALI’s first EP Circles caused a stir earlier this year with six perfectly tuned tracks about her personal experiences and the stories she and her friends share with each other. Noteworthy titles such as “Lucy” helped encapsulate the anticipation of young love while other singles like “Again” focused on the larger complexities of these emotions.
Whether excited or taking a step back, KALI’s music captures a distinct sense of learning by trial and error, while being hopeful yet uncertain. Polishing life experiences into a cohesive theme, KALI shines at relaying personal details in a universal way, giving listeners an introspective view of the young artist while leaving space to see themselves in KALI’s music.
With more to come next year, including a 2022 US tour supporting indie artist Claud and a new EP on the way, KALI is one of our youngest artists to watch, but that only gives her more time to flourish. Catch KALI live in Los Angeles on March 9 at Troubadour and March 11 at Constellation Room in Santa Ana.
